Dear Shelli, I actually wrote a follow up to this blog and when I changed my template and moved to WordPress 3.1 it lost my 2nd and lates blog. I will republish it today.

Hi Howie, I loved reading about your sister, and your opinions re strong women. What fun you must have had in Israel. Thank you for sharing so much of your life. Reading your work calms me more than you know. I seldom make a comment, but have decided to make a change to that policy. I have been thinking a lot about families and why some stick together and why some spread to all corners of the earth, as mine has, splintered really into bits and pieces of nothing. I am wondering what you think causes the difference in families.. Maybe you would consider writing another article about that.

I think you are absolutely right. Roosevelt only instituted the New Deal when he realized that the depression was causing the government to lose control of the people. Since that time our government and the wealthy class have found more sophisticated ways of maintaing control. If they lose it then it will be hell. Peace, howie

Excellent blog, Howie. I think that "making money" and "maintaining control" constitute our foreign policy, because corporations rule the world (governments are merely PR and enforcemnt branches) and their function is to make money. Ideals are nice to hear sometimes, but at best useless poetic fluff, at worst something that must be stamped out when it gets in the way of making money and controling. I don't think Americans will ever stand up to their government. I think half or so of the population agree with the government. Also, I thnk the time when it was possible for Americans to stand up to their government passed about a century ago...if it were ever tried, it would be immediately crushed and the world would see the biggest police state ever known to man.

We bought this home, here in Washington State, on a very nice island with much nicer homes for $205,000.00. We have 4 bedrooms, three bathrooms, and all in all a much nicer home. The difference in housing prices is the same in every expense we have. So all that is being suggested is that you make sure that you have enough cash to visit Los Angeles. I have no desire to ever go back. After 61 years there I have had enough. Peace, howie

You have a great perspective on life Howie! You obviously stayed grounded with a heart for family. You're certainly in touch with the reality of our current government... which is in a sad state; Compared to the wishes & visions of our founding fathers. At least we can still enjoy the company of our loved ones without government approval :)

Reminds me when I was a kid I thought a place 40 miles away was like on the other side of the world...until I started driving trucks and commonly drove over 500 miles every day, lol. Now I just want to go to Mars...yes, on a one way trip.

Dear Mark, I assume you are correct and we are about the same age. Over the years I have attended college long enough toget a few degrees but never got one. I will probably take another class this year. My father did his best to keep me in college but my stubborn streak was to strong. It was probably Jack Keroucs fault. I read his book and a lot of others of the his generation. My parents taught me that middle class values were not all they were cracked up to be. My father took me to San Francisco to see Allen Ginsberg read Howl. So what ever happened I took the path that I was set upon. Peace, howie

This new format is very disconcerting.

Your blog describes a family life and youthful need to travel very to my own....we must be about the same age. I had similar problems with my mom, in my case she was frequently hysterical, but never enough to need hospitalization. My dad was very clever in the way he managed to keep me in College until I was graduated before hitting the road, in my case for several years bumming around Europe. I wound up in Istanbul in the spring of '67, planning on embarking for Israel. The six day war interrupted my plans, and I never did get to Israel.
